Orb Wins The 2013 Kentucky Derby

Despite the rain and sloppy track Florida Boy Orb and Joel Rosario won the Kentucky Derby today, May 4, 2013. The 1 ¼ mile dirt race was extremely sloppy as Orb crossed the finish line first in the 139th Run For The Roses. The Kentucky Derby 139 is Orb’s fifth straight win in a row!

Crazy-eyed Palace Malice was in the lead for the first part of the 2013 Kentucky Derby. Orb inevitably passed up Palace Malice and Goldencents around the last turn. The crowd topped over 150,000 people as fans toughed out the rain to watch Orb cross the finish line first. This was trainer Shug McGaughey’s first Kentucky Derby win in seven years.

Jockey Joel Rosario stated, “It’s awesome! I won the $10 Million Dubai World Cup and to win the Derby now it’s like a dream. I am so happy for Shug McGaughey. I feel awesome!”

Trainer Shug McGaughey stated, “I’m so happy to win a Derby in my home state. I was just going in it to have fun. I’ve been so excited and nervous. Orb was just relaxed today in the paddock and on the track all week.”

When asked about his position in the race Joel Rosario added, “I was so far behind, I just let him be calm and relaxed and he was available to do it.”

Lady and The Track has been watching Orb and Joel Rosario at Gulfstream Park over the season. We wish them a heartfelt congratulations on winning the 2013 Kentucky Derby!
