London Bridge Breeder’s Cup Marathon Champion

London Bridge, with 9/1 odds at post, and jockey Mike Smith won the 2013 Breeder’s Cup Marathon on the first day of the two-day World Championship event. London Bridge finished just in front of Blueskiesandrainbows and Wordly. London Bridge took the $500,000 purse in the 1 ¾ mile dirt race for three-year-olds and up.

In a post race interview, Mike Smith admittedly reported he had his doubts about London Bridge on the track and is “happy his connections followed their dreams.”

The 2013 Breeders’ Cup Marathon entry and victory was a first for trainer Jo Hughes. The three-year-old colt used Lasix for the first time in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Marathon. Eastwind Racing and Mme M. Trussel, who only purchased the colt a month ago, own London Bridge.

In related news, jockey Stevens rode his 100th Breeders’ Cup race aboard Ever Rider in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Marathon, who sadly finished last.
