Fashion Plate tops Kentucky Oaks Contenders with Style

Fashion Plate tops Kentucky Oaks Contenders with Style: Fashion Plate is another horse set to race in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, May 2, 2014. Fashion Plate is trained by Simon Callaghan. Callaghan hails from Newmarket England and currently trains Fashion Plate and other horses in California. Callaghan has been working with horses since the age of 16 and was mentored by highly esteemed and decorated trainers including Richard Hannon and Todd Pletcher and Callaghan’s own father, Neville Callaghan, was a trainer.

Fashion Plate is owned by Arnold Zetcher LLC and Michael B. Tabor. Zetcher is former President and Chairman and CEO of Talbot’s, the women’s clothing store company, hence Fashion Plate as the race horse’s name. Tabor, another owner and billionaire, also hails from England like trainer Callaghan. Tabor has been building his horse stable since 1994 and has already won the Kentucky Derby once in 1995 with Thunder Gulch.

Fashion Plate was sired by Old Fashioned, who was a favorite in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, but unfortunately had to retire early due to an injury. This race year has proved to be a good one for Fashion Plate so far in leading up to the 2014 Kentucky Oaks. Fashion Plate was bred in Kentucky by Springland Farm and Fox Hill Farms, Inc.

Fashion Plate won the 1 1/6 miles Santa Anita Oaks (Santa Anita Oaks recap/replay) on April 5th at Santa Anita Park and on February 1 of this year, Fashion Plate won the 1 mile Las Virgenes (Las Virgenes recap/replay) also at Santa Anita Park. Jockey Gary Stevens has led Fashion Plate to victory in both of those races. No word yet on if he’ll team up with Fashion Plate in the 2014 Kentucky Oaks.

So far, Fashion Plate has earned $420,000, and Fashion Plate’s team certainly hopes to add to those earnings with a win in the 2014 Kentucky Oaks.

Why we’d bet on Fashion Plate in the 2014 Kentucky Oaks?
Impressive gate to wire performances are hard to forget. Can you believe jockey Gary Stevens has never won the Kentucky Oaks? He’s probably due for a win.
Why we wouldn’t?
Fashion Plate’s skeptics are concerned the filly may not be able to preform in Kentucky like she has in California.
