Preakness Stakes Travel Tips

Just because the 2014 Preakness Stakes is the main event on May 17th doesn’t mean that you can’t make a weekend of it and find plenty of fun and exciting things to do in Baltimore, Maryland, which is the city surrounding the Pimlico Race Course.

If sports are your thing, then you can visit Oriole Park and Camden yards during your visit to Baltimore for the 139th Running of the Preakness Stakes. This is one of major league baseball’s newest stadiums, but it still represents the old fashioned all American feel of baseball. Call ahead and get a walking tour.

If art, history, and culture are your thing then Baltimore has plenty to offer. Visit the Fort McHenry National Monument. It is an amazing piece of American History as it is the location that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the US National Anthem. For great art try out The Walters Art Museum or the American Visionary Art Museum, which houses unique Folk Art, or try out the more traditional Baltimore Museum of Art for a great cultural experience. You could also take in some world class entertainment at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

Baltimore also boasts a rich nautical history. You can enjoy the water yourself on a Baltimore Water Taxi or visit the Historic Ships in Baltimore. For hip and fun things to do go visit Charm City Cakes where famous chef Duff is known for making unique cakes or go shopping at Towson Town Center or The Avenue at White Marsh for mainstream shops and unique specialty shops. Also be sure to check out the very walkable Federal Hill neighborhood shops.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure to go out and explore Baltimore and make a whole experience out of your time at the Preakness Stakes.
