Be a Lucky Lady at the Ricoh Woodbine Mile

The weather has started to cool down a little, but it’s not quite fall yet, so at this Sunday’s Ricoh Woodbine Mile at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada, be sure to choose an outfit that will transition into your fall wardrobe. You definitely want to avoid summer fabrics like seersucker or eyelet, but there are a lot of summer trends that designers are carrying into fall.

Ricoh Woodbine Mile 2013

Extra style points awarded for the Ricoh Woodbine Mile if the pieces coordinate with either matching patterns or colors that coordinate.

My pick for the 17th edition of the Ricoh Woodbine Mile is the crop top trend. Don’t be scared, this season’s crop top is not full stomach exposure and it can be just as proper and polished as any other race day ensemble. The key is to pick a higher waisted skirt that comes in at the smallest part of your waist, just under you ribs and a top that shows just a small sliver of your waist. Even if your stomach is your problem area you can pull of this trend. In fact, this trend covers your stomach’s trouble spots and highlights the slimmest part of every woman.

Also, make sure that the neck of the top does not scoop to low and that your skirt hits just below your knee or longer. The point is not to show too much skin, it’s to give a little peek-a-boo effect that is a little bit playful but still lady like. I particularly like a crop top pared with a full skirt to give the look a nod to retro era 1950’s style, but if you have a boyish figure and want to add curves then feel free to try a sleek pencil skirt. Score extra style points if the pieces coordinate with either matching patterns or colors that coordinate.

Take a cue from Zoe Saldana, Scarlett Johannson and Rooney Mara who make the crop top trend look modern and fun, but still refined. The matching crop top and skirt pair featured for the Ricoh Woodbine Mile, bring a little bit of subtle flare to the look with a fun and quirky print, which is also on trend for fall 2013.

Choose a smaller hat or fascinator to top off the look and stay away from a wide brimmed hat to keep the look clean, feminine, and polished. You are already playing with shape in this look so you want to stay away from hats that overwhelm. My pick to go with the Modcloth outfit is the black fascinator headband (shown below) from Fashion at the Races. It has enough drama, but the classic black color doesn’t clash with the print of the outfit. Pair it with a black stiletto and you are all set for race day!

The Ricoh Woodbine Mile Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race takes place on Sunday, September 15, 2013.
