Winner of the 2012 Florida Derby, Take Charge Indy, will compete in the Skip Away Stakes on Saturday March 30, 2013. The $100,000 Skip Away Stakes is a 1 3/16 mile dirt race for four-year-olds and up and is a prelude to the 2013 Florida Derby. Take Charge Indy will run against nine other ambitious thoroughbreds, which include Cigar Mile who is co-owned by Miami Heat forward Rashard Lewis.

The exciting news around the water cooler is that Take Charge Indy will team up with jockey Rosie Napravnik for the Skip Away Stakes! The four-year-old colt is trained by world famous Patrick Byrne and co-owned by Maribeth & Chuck Sandford and WinStar Farm.

We spoke to Maribeth Sandford about Take Charge Indy this morning and she stated, “Take Charge Indy is ready. He is in great shape and we expect him to do well.”

Regarding the competitive field Maribeth Sandford added, “the competition for the Skip Away Stakes is hard but Patrick has him ready to go.”

Take Charge Indy was also nominated to the New Orleans Handicap on March 30th but the decision was made to run at Gulfstream Park instead. He currently resides at Palm Meadows Training Center in Boynton Beach, Florida, which is only about a 45-minute van ride from Gulfstream Park.

In his most recent race on February 9, 2013, Take Charge Indy and jockey John Velazquez finished third in the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park. He lost by 7 ½ lengths but ran 33 feet further than the first place winner Graydar.
