Investec Derby; A Derby Fit For A Queen
The UK’s biggest and best Derby, the 234th Investec Derby, takes place on Saturday June 1, 2013 at Epsom Downs Racecourse with a total prize fund of over $1.5 million. The Derby is for three-year-old colts and fillies and is run over a 1 mile, four furlong, and ten yard track. After today’s $1 million+ entry fee, the classic Derby hosts fifteen prestigious colts.
The Investec Derby first ran in 1780 and is the UK’s most prestigious race to win. Everyone wants to win the Derby, including the Queen. Queen Elizabeth has entered the Investec Derby nine times. Carlton House, the Queen’s best horse, finished third in 2011. The Queen is know to be one of Britain’s leading breeders with over 65 years of experience. Her enduring relationship with horses is said to be charming and astonishing (see video below). Queen Elizabeth was recently featured in a documentary on BBC NEWS that clearly reveals her extensive knowledge of thoroughbred horses. Unfortunately, US racing fans will have to wait a few days to see this documentary, as it isn’t yet available for us to view online. Lady and The Track will update links to view the Queen’s documentary as soon as it’s available.
