Del Mar and Saratoga Kick Off Fashionable Summer Fun:
This week Del Mar and Saratoga will kick off their long awaited summer meets. Fans on the East coast have anxiously waited for Saratoga to open its doors to spend warm sunny days at the beautiful track with the “magical” water. On the West coast, much like the Derby, fans have carefully put together flawless outfits in preparation for the long awaited opening day at Del Mar.
Saratoga: Celebrating 150 year of racing, Opening Day at Saratoga is Friday July 19, 2013. The 2013 Saratoga Race Course meet is forty days long and takes place from July 19th to Labor Day, September 2nd. Saratoga’s feature race will be the 144th Travers Stakes, also known as the “Mid-Summer Derby”, on Saturday September 2, 2013. All three 2013 Triple Crown winners are pointed towards the Travers Stakes including Kentucky Derby winner Orb, Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow, and Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice.
Saratoga will host its 22nd annual hat contest on Sunday July 12, 2013 at 12:00 pm. In Saratoga, the fancy hat tradition dates back to the Victorian era and is a symbol that the summer meet is underway. This year, fashionable fans are encouraged to commemorate Saratoga’s 150th anniversary by adding Victorian flair to their hats and headpieces!
