The Mrs. Revere Stakes is named after the highly competitive filly Mrs. Revere owned by Drs. David Richardson and Hiram Polk who made a name for herself racing in the mid-80’s winning four stakes races at Churchill Downs in 1984-85. Past winners include Centre Court in 2012 and Marketing Mix in 2011.

The 3 year-old filly trained by F. Abbott III and the daughter of 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, Nellie Cashman, was the upset winner of this summer’s $150,000 Virginia Oaks (GIII) on July 13, 2013 romping at 19-1 for the win. Next out on August 18, she was the unfortunate loser of the $200,000 Woodford Reserve Lake Placid (GII). She was closing fastest of all but bumped a rival in the deep stretch and was disqualified after a 20-1 victory. Last out on October 18, she was 2nd after closing on the inside, challenged but was out-finished in the Keeneland Pin Oak Valley View Stakes (GIII). Nellie Cashman has come in first or second in each of her five starts since moving to the turf in May. Nellie Cashman will remain training at Fair Hill where on November 10 she posted a 5F bullet in 1.00.00 1/3. Nellie Cashman has a racing record of 10:2-4-2 and breaks from post #8 under her regular Maryland-based rider, Forest Boyce.

Hit the Board Stables’ daughter of Ready’s Image, I’m Already Sexy, trained by Wayne Catalano, last out was sixth in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (GI) ran at 1 1/8 on the grass October 12, where she ran 4 wide early and couldn’t stay up for the win. On September 14 in the Arlington Pucker Up Stakes (GIII) she broke readily, had the inside advantage and went on to win. Prior, on August 17 in the Arlington Hatoof Stakes ran at 1 1/16 on the turf, she was forwardly placed along the rail, conceded the lead to a rival, switched to the outside of the lead then on the far turn, drew away under pressure to win. She has a race record of 10:5-0-0, so she better win here. I’m Already Sexy has been training at Churchill recently worked 4F in 48.20 2/51 on November 12th. She has the services of her regular jockey Flourent Geroux and bolts from gate #4.

Emotional Kitten

Emotional Kitten is one of Kari’s picks for the 2013 Ms. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs despite her rail position.

My other favorite that I’ve been rooting for all year and I’ve yet to hit on is the Kitten’s Joy baby Emotional Kitten, trained by Wesley Ward. On October 12, 2013 in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (GI) she rallied the field to the stretch, was 3 wide but too late and finished 7th. In the Del Mark Oaks (GI) on August 7, 1 1/18 on the turf, she pulled between, chased inside and again was 4 wide in the stretch but coming on willingly for third. At Betfair on July 13, she ran 2nd to Emollient in the American Oaks (GI) where she stalked the pace, was 3 deep in the stretch, 3 wide gaining but floated out late and couldn’t get by her. Emotional Kitten has been training at Keeneland on the all-weather track and turf where on November 5 she breezed 6f in 1:14.00 2/4 and has a record of 13:3-2-3. Emotional Kitten breaks from post #1 with Victor Espinoza in the irons.

For a longshot I’m going with the McPeek trained Praia out of the sire Distorted Humor. She’s been training like a beast at Keeneland posting some bullets. On November 9th she worked 4F in 48.00 7/44. Last out she won an Allowance at Keeneland on October 26. She was 10th in the Garden City on September 14th. She has placed twice in stakes races on July 13 in the Virginia Oaks (GIII) and on June 15 in the Regret Stakes (GIII). Praia has a racing record of 10:2-5 and will have A. Garcia in the saddle and leaves from post #11.

Bottom line for the 2013 Mrs. Revere Stakes is it’s a wide-open field with a group of fillies that seem to have different sorts of running styles so it’ll be interesting to see how it sets up. I have to give Emotional Kitten one more shot even though I’m not keen on her post. I just hope he can keep her out of traffic and not running wide again. I think Nellie Cashman and I’ll Already Sexy have a great shot. Tapicat is scary but she’ll have to run her legs off from that post. I’m going to give Praia a shot here and may the best filly win! Safe run and good luck to all.
