Hollywood Starlet Stakes; Who’s Gonna Shine Saturday?

2013 Hollywood Starlet Stakes (GI); Who’s Gonna Shine Saturday?

The 33rd running of the Hollywood Starlet Stakes takes place this Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Betfair Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California. The race is for 2 year-old fillies running 1 1/16 miles (8.5F) on the cushion track for a purse of $500,000. The race was initially run on the dirt until 2006 when the new synthetic Cushion Track was installed. From 1985 through 1990 it was raced at the distance of one mile.

The Hollywood Starlet Stakes is the final major race of the year for young fillies and is frequented by horses coming out of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. In 2003, Hollywood Story became the first maiden to win the Starlet in the history of the event. The speed record is held on the cushion by Country Star set in 2007 in 1:40.54 and on the dirt by Spendid Blendid in 2004 in 1:41.82.

The 2013 Hollywood Starlet Stakes is set to start at 3:04 pm PST and is the 6th race of the day on a card of 9.

The Ken McPeek trained Rosalind from the sire Broken Vow is recently coming off a 16 length rally from last in the field to a fast closing third in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies race on November 2, 2013 and was defeated by only a half length. This pretty chestnut broke her maiden by 2 1/2 lengths in her August 2 debut at Ellis Park. Following that she has two placings, one in the (GII) Pocahontas at Churchill Downs on September 7th where she finished third and a second place finish in the (GI) Alcibiades at Keeneland on October 4th. On November 23, Rosalind worked 4F at Keeneland on Fast All Weather Track in :48.00 finishing 6/33. Most recent on December 3rd she worked 4F at Betfair Hollywood Park on the poly in :49.00 finishing 15/41. Rosalind gets the services of J. Rosario and exits gate #8.

Two other fillies in here to include are the Eoin Harty trained A.P. Indy daughter Arethusa who broke her maiden recently in the Sharp Cat Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park going 1 1/16 on November 16th blowing out a smokin-hot 8 1/4 length win. She initially broke slow, settled off the rail then moved on the outside and rallied past the leader to win in the stretch. She has been training at Hollywood on poly where she recently worked 5f on December 2nd in 1:02.60 31/42 and prior on November 25, 4f in 50.00 27/30. She gets her same jockey Corey Nakatani and exits post #6.

I’m also digging the young filly Taste Like Candy to run huge here for a long shot. The Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly stormed home in her 6 1/2 length debut win at Santa Anita on October 20th. She has a pedigree suited for two turns coming from the sire of Candy Ride who won the 1 1/4 Pacific Classic, and her A.P.Indy dam, a half-sister to Affirmed Success, who won three times from 1 1/16 to 1 1/8. Taste Like Candy earned her maiden on October 26 and will be ridden by leading jockey R. Bejarano and exits post #2

This sets up to be a very tough race with three fillies coming out of the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies race. Untapable and Concave both had bad trips after getting pulled up after the unfortunate breakdown of Secret Compass and both of those fillies could run huge here. I’m going with Rosalind to win the 2013 edition of the Hollywood Starlet Stakes. I loved the huge run she made at Santa Anita and it really surprised me. I think the post is great for her and it will be interesting to see if McPeek can pull if off again after winning last year with Pure Fun. I wouldn’t leave Arethusa or Taste Like Candy off a ticket either. I’ll probably play an exacta box with the three and use them one leg of a pick 3. Good luck to all of the fillies Saturday and their connections. Run safe!
