Gotham Stakes; Samraat Beats Out Uncle Sigh Again

Samraat Beats Out Uncle Sigh Again at the 2014 Gotham Stakes: The 2014 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct Race Track proved to be an intense race on Saturday, March 1, 2014. The top three contenders and place holders, Samraat, Uncle Sigh, and In Trouble battled hard all the way through the race, with only about a ½ length separating each of them when they came to the line.

The Gotham Stakes is a Grade 3 race with a large $500,000 purse over a 1 1/16 mile inner fast track for 3-year-olds. Samraat, the race’s winner scored a major win gaining 50 points towards the Kentucky Derby and he can add them to the 10 points that he won at the Grade 3 Withers Stakes. This gives Samraat a great position at the gate in the 2014 Kentucky Derby.

Samraat won the 2014 Gotham Stakes with a time of 1:44.44 with jockey Jose L. Ortiz and this win means that Samraat is still undefeated with five starts. Rick Violette, Samraat’s trainer said of Samraat, “This is a real horse now…We knew he had a shot to be a real horse after the Withers. HE proved he is a real horse today. This was a good field. It was a deep field of horses.”

This wasn’t the first time that Samraat ran against Uncle Sigh. Samraat beat out Uncle Sigh at the Withers Stakes previously though the race was not as close then as it was at the Gotham Stakes, and the pair is set to compete again at the Wood Memorial in the last Big Kentucky Derby prep race. So we will have to wait and see what lies in store for Samraat and Uncle Sigh then, perhaps Samraat will remain undefeated or perhaps Uncle Sigh will usurp the leader.
