Honeybee Stakes 2014

Euphrosyne wins the 2014 Honeybee Stakes after Sugar Shock Disqualified at Oaklawn Park on Saturday, March 8, 2014 and gains fifty points on the Kentucky Oaks Trail.

In the 2014 Honeybee Stakes, Sugar Shock actually ran the fastest and originally took home first place, but Sugar Shock was disqualified for interference. The pacesetter of the race was Taris, who was second with Euphrosyne, originally in third place in the beginning of the race. Taris was one of the big favorites going into the race, but Taris didn’t make the top three.

Sugar Shock, ridden by jockey Channing Hill, took charge and finished the race a neck ahead of Euphrosyne for a time of 1:45.68 on the fast track. However, after an inquiry, Sugar Shock, the 9-5 favorite, was disqualified for drifting into the path of Euphrosyne. Euphrosyne was closing on the outside and Please Explain was winding her way through traffic, and Sugar Shock went past both of them. Euphrosyne came into this race the 8-1 fourth choice and was ridden by jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. and trained by Steven M. Asmussen. Please Explain came in third place.

Please Explain’s jockey Drayden Van Dyke also laid a claim against Sugar Shock for interference in the deep stretch but that claim was not vindicated as was the claim made by Euhprosyne.

This was a big win for Euphrosyne, campaigned by Gillian S. Campbell, Ralph and Shelly Stayer, and Dan Clark and Greg Skoda; it earned her 50 points towards a start in the grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, and more than doubled her career earnings.
