California Chrome wins the 2014 San Felipe Stakes: The 2014 San Felipe Stakes took place at Santa Anita Park and was the first of four graded stakes on the Santa Anita Handicap program on Saturday, March 8, 2014. The grade 2 San Felipe Stakes is 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds and has a $300,000 purse and is part of the 2014 Road to the Kentucky Derby.

California Chrome took home the 2014 San Felipe win giving him a three win streak. He won by a margin of 7 ¼ lengths. He inched away from Midnight Hawk after the far turn and took command in the drive, and won pretty easily in the final stretch.

California Chrome is trained by Art Sherman who reported, “We all know Santa Anita’s a speed-biased type of track, so it was really great to see him with the hold he had on him…It’s unbelievable.”

The favorite going into the race was actually Bayern, but Bayern did not even run in the race due to a bruised foot.

California Chrome was ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza and together they posted a winning time of 1:40.59. Midnight Hawk came in second place and Kristo came in a distance third place. This victory won California Chrome 50 points toward a start in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and it looks like California Chrome will be using those 50 points with plans to race in the Derby.

Sherman stated, “I needed this 50 points and we’ll kind of see what happens. Now I think I deserve to go to the Derby.”

California Chrome’s owners seem hopeful that California Chrome will continue to race well. Owner Steve Coburn said, “This horse is improving right at the right time. People keep sayings he’s only a California-bred. The horse doesn’t know that…He just keeps looking better and better.”
