Cairo Prince Disappoints but Constitution Comes through for the Win at the 2014 Florida Derby: The GI Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park is a 1 1/18 miles race and co-owned WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stable’s Constitution took home the win on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Constitution is a three-year-old colt and is trained by Todd Pletcher and was ridden by jockey Javier Castellano.

Wildcat Red took second place and General A Rod came in third with Cairo Prince rounded out the top four in the 2014 Florida Derby. This was a very disappointing and unexpected race for Cairo Prince, who was the 6/5 favorite coming into the race. Cairo Prince stayed mid-pack and tried to speed up past the other horses but just couldn’t seem to beat out the rest going into the far turn.

It was however, a great day for Constitution as this was his first time to race against graded stakes competitors and it seems that he fit right in. The pace setter was Wildcat Red, but Constitution was able to cut in along the rail and get past Wildcat Red at the wire. Wildcat Red had a good break from the great, with Constitution in third place at first, but Constitution was able to make a hard drive down the rail and took the lead. Things are looking bright for Constitution as he now takes 100 points towards the 2014 Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Pletcher said, “This colt’s come so far in such a short period of time…You know, three months ago we were not even thinking about this. Everything’s fallen into place. It’s a real tribute to how talented he is and how far he’s been able to come.”

We will have to just wait and see what Constitution will do at the Kentucky Derby.
