Kentucky Derby 2014; Wildcat Red “full of himself!”
Kentucky Derby 2014; Wildcat Red “full of himself!”: Florida bred Wildcat Red sits in the 9th place position on the Kentucky Derby leader board with 90 points. The Jose Garoffalo trained three-year-old colt pleased his connections after a workout Tuesday morning on the Churchill Downs track in preparation for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby set to take place on Saturday, May 3, 2014.
After Wildcat Red and exercise rider Juan Belmonte galloped the 1 1/8 miles, trainer Jose Garoffalo stated, “The way he went today was amazing. I’m very happy with it. We’re still very optimistic. It seems he likes the track. I saw a big difference between today and Sunday. He’s full of himself.”
Some critics are skeptical if Wildcat Red can preform on the Churchill Downs track the same way he’s handled the dirt track at Gulfstream Park. Jose Garoffalo reported,“He’s perfect. He had a very easy workout and is saving everything for Saturday. There are people who are skeptical about the workout (on Monday), but he did it so easily and Saez felt the horse did well. He did something that I really liked. After he pulled up, a horse went by on his outside and he grabbed onto the bit and wanted to go with him. Saez took a hold of him, or he would have breezed again. That’s what people didn’t notice.”
Jose Garoffalo remarked about the Florida-bred colt’s competitive nature saying, “He needs the company, but we don’t need the company during the workout. He’ll have a lot of company in the race. He’ll have 19 horse for company.”
Wildcat Red is currently ranked number 8 out of 29,350 horses this year and has earned $610,000 this year with $152,500 earnings per start. Wildcat Red has had 4 starts this year with 2 firsts and 2 seconds and 0 thirds. Over the course of Wildcat Red’s career there have been 7 starts, 4 firsts, and 3 seconds, and 0 thirds, with total career earnings of $690,850 and $98,693 earnings per start.
Wildcat Red had a pretty impressive career and hopefully that career will remain impressive as Wildcat Red is on the leader board as a major contender in the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Wildcat Red has earned points on the trail to the Kentucky Derby this year at the 2014 Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Florida Derby Stakes. On February 22, 2014 at the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park, Wildcat Red came in 1st place in the grade 2 1 1/16 mile race. On March 29, 2014 at the 2014 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park Wildcat Red came in 2nd place behind Constitution. It was a grade 1 race at a slightly shorter distance at 1 1/8 miles.
Wildcat Red will team up with jockey Luis Saez in the 2014 Kentucky Derby, who was atop of the colt for his Fountain of Youth victory. Wildcat Red is owned by Honors Stable Corp and was bred by Moreau Bloodstoc International, Inc. and Winter Racing Enterprise, I. Wildcat Red was foaled on March 29th, 2011 with D’wildcat and dam Racene.
