Sweet Reason and Sweet Whiskey Duel for the TVG Acorn Win

Sweet Reason and Sweet Whiskey Duel for the TVG Acorn Win: Sweet Reason and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. win the 84th Running of the Acorn Stakes on Saturday, June 7, 2014. The G1 $750,000 one-mile dirt race for three-year-old fillies was an exciting one as Sweet reason and Sweet Whiskey battled it out until the very end in a thirteen-horse field.

Sweet Reason’s trainer Leah Gyamati was a bit concerned going into the TVG Acorn and saying, “After the Gazelle, I didn’t like how she was looking. I pulled some blood on her. There were little things off, nothing major, probably just wear and tear from the winter. She probably took it harder than I thought she did going into the race. We just did a lot of work on that, lots of vitamins. There wasn’t anything major. This time we had a fair shot with the pace, I thought. I thought that if that was my excuse last time, which I was hoping was my excuse, I thought maybe this time I’d get a chance to see, maybe, a different race set up for her.”

Fiftyshadesofgold led the TVG Acorn pack but Sweet Whiskey and Sweet Reason rallied at the end. Sweet Reason eventually passed up a determined Sweet Whiskey and won the 2014 TVG Acorn by only a half-length. Sweet Reason finished the G1 race in 1:34.98.

Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. was happy with Sweet Reason’s performance saying, “I got a perfect trip. Everything turned out perfectly. She broke, I sat, I waited, waited, waited and turned the corner and saved all the ground I could. Then, I got clear and she took off. Very nice.”
