V.E. Day Wins Travers Stakes 2014 Results & Replay: V.E. Day and jockey Javier Castellano won the 1 1/4 mile 145th running of the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, August 23, 2014 for trainer Jimmy Jerkens, who also trains 2nd place finisher Wicked Strong with a photo finish.

V.E. Day and jockey Javier Castellano won the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, August 23, 2014 for trainer Jimmy Jerkens.

After winning the $1,250,000 Travers Stakes with V.E. Day Jimmy Jerkens reported, “I wasn’t absolutely sure it was V. E. Day because he had so much mud on him, until they got a little closer and I saw the silks and then I knew it was him. I said, ‘Man, what a feeling. I know I’m going to win the Travers; I just don’t know with who. It means an awful lot. It’s unreal. I just feel bad for Wicked Strong; that’s the only thing, he ran so hard. [But] I’ll take it.”

Jockey Javier Castellano said after the 2014 Travers Stakes, “I was very satisfied, the way my horse did it today. I’m happy for Jimmy; he’s a great horseman. He does such a good job. We’ve had good experiences in the past, winning the Travers with Afleet Express.”

Castellano added, “The way I handicapped the race, a couple of horses had speed. In the Curlin he came from way back. I learned a lot watching that race. I just took my time. I had a lot of patience, and it paid off today.”

The grateful jockey added, “I’m very fortunate to ride a lot of good horses. I’m very blessed to win four Travers.”

Heavy favorite Bayern finished the the Travers Stakes in last place. No word yet on the health of the Bob Baffert trained colt but experts suggest it just wasn’t his day.
