Get to Know: New Grade One winner, Itsmyluckyday

Get to Know: New Grade One winner, Itsmyluckyday: When I say “Grade One” winner, we can think of multiple horses, but there is a new horse to add to your list. His name is Itsmyluckyday, and his lucky day was on Saturday, August 30, 2014 when he finally got the well-deserved grade one win he so desperately deserved. The Lawyer Ron colt finished first for the fourth time in five starts this year. He also, took revenge to Moreno, who outran him last out in the Whitney on August 2, 2014. I recently spoke with the co-owner of Itsmyluckyday and trainer Eddie Plesa’s wife, Laurie Plesa. She was kind enough to answer some questions for me about the race and the horse.

Laurie had high expectations for the colt and when I asked how she felt about the chances of Itsmyluckyday in the Woodward, she responded with confidence saying, “Itsmyluckyday came out of the race great. He was tired, he ran his eyeballs out. What a stretch run!”

The stretch run of the Woodward was quite an exhilarating one! If you haven’t seen the race, I suggest you watch it below! One of the highlights of Saratoga for a fan like myself. I love when two horses battle it out! It is what the sport is all about!

But, who is Itsmyluckyday when he isn’t gutting out his components down the homestretch? I spoke with Laurie about this as well. Itsmyluckyday seems to be the personality of the Plesa stable! Just like any horse, he has a favorite treat. What is his favorite treat?

Laurie Plesa revealed, “He has a lot of personality around the barn. Some of his fans come to the barn to see him and feed him carrots. He loves his carrots.”

Itsmyluckyday is arguably one of the better older horses of 2014, as he hasn’t finished off the board this year, and with the addition of blinkers, it looks like we will be seeing more gutsy efforts from the colt. When it came down to asking Laurie about her husband’s plans for their shining star, she responded with comments about how Eddie only makes plans based on what his horses tell him. The horse comes first.

Laurie Plesa stated, “Eddie has not decide on his course of action. [He is] taking his time to let Itsmyluckyday tell him.”

If the Jockey Club Gold Cub is next for the star colt, he is likely to run into Palace Malice, Will Take Charge, and familiar foe, Moreno. With the addition of blinkers, I don’t see this being too big of a concern for Itsmyluckyday. He is maturing well, and this year seems to be his year! He is only getting better, and we will likely see the best of him in the next few starts! Breeders’ Cup Classic cold be calling his name!
