2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championship “Win and You’re In” Mindless Statistics
About half of all “Win and You’re In” winners take home the trophy at the Breeders’ Cup World Championship. See past winners and WAYI statistics. Get to know Kari Ward as she covers the 2013 Breeders’ Cup. 

Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championship series both days with my sister and we had a total blast. It was my first time to attend a “big time” racing event and I was more than thrilled. I kept my programs since we decided to attend this year for the 30th anniversary and I wanted keep track of the data and statistics from the races. I wrote down all off the top 3 finishers in each race and was starting to wonder how well the “Win and You’re In” horses did last year. The “Challenge” winners of each race are denoted by a marker in the program next to their name.

I’m going to list Friday and Saturday’s races from 2012 with the top three finishers of each race. Basically just the Win, Place & Show. As for the superfectas, I’m sure more hit the board. I will use an asterisk * by the names of the horses that won “Win and You’re In” races and will list the ones that didn’t crack the top three but raced below.

In conclusion, there were 14 races with 3 places to hit Win, Place & Show for a total of 42 spots. There were 41 “Win and You’re In” (W&YI) horses that made it to Santa Anita out of a total of 159 that showed up to race last year that made up almost 25% of the field.

Out of those 41 winners: 7 horses were first, 8 were second, and 5 were third with 21 not hitting the board, or if they did, they hit the bottom of the superfecta. So 20 hit the board and 21 did not. However out of 14 races, 7 won. So approximately 50% of the WAYI horses hit the board.

The interesting one for me is Little Mike. He won a Challenge race last year and went off at 15-1 odds and I did not bet him. I had my money on Shareta (IR), Trailblazer (JP) & Slim Shadey, denied. The couple behind us hit win/place/show on Little Mike and were going nutz. They picked him because her husband’s name was Mike. Go figure. That is what I love about this sport though and what makes it so much fun. He won a “Win and You’re In” again this year so we’ll see how his odds stack up this time.

Last year at the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championship my betting prowess wasn’t so hot. I hit an exacta on a pre-race on Saturday’s card. I won an exacta box on Wise Dan/Animal Kingdom and I missed the Trifecta on the Classic by leaving Fort Larned out (initially had him in) and was not happy about that one. This year I think I’m going to try and play a few pick 3’s and put money on horses to W/P and try that angle.

Since my wagering left a little to be desired for moi, it’s what propelled me to start following horseracing like a fiend this past year. Prior, since 2006, I’ve only watched and wagered the Triple Crown series and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. I really amped it up around the Triple Crown Trail this year and it only got more so with me writing for Lady and The Track. I can honestly say, this is a dream come true as it’s now my favorite sport and so much fun! I feel very blessed. I’m very thankful for Lady and The Track for trusting in me and allowing me to write for them. What a gift!

So why did I write this? I have no clue except numbers get to me sometimes and I’m a little superstitious about them. Take it for what it’s worth but with close to 50% of the “Win and You’re In” horses hitting the board last year, I’m going to look pretty close at the ones that won for the 2013 edition of the Breeders’ Cup World Championship. This year I’m going again with even more la familia and I can’t wait to see that beautiful track with the San Bernadino Mountains towering over it, hang at Clocker’s Corner early in the morning to watch the horses workout and go barnside to get lots of pictures. I also look forward to meeting new friends and hanging with some old ones. The “30th” Anniversary is going to be spectacular, let the racing and wagering begin.
