Emollient is expected to redeem herself at the 2013 American Oaks on Saturday July 13th at Betfair Hollywood Park.

American Oaks 2013 Odds & Picks by HorseFlyOnaWall:

The twelfth running of the $350,000 American Oaks is set to take place on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Betfair Hollywood Park. The race is for 3-year-old fillies on the grass at 1 1/4 miles with some of the best turf fillies vying for a slice of the pie. The 2013 American Oaks is the 9th race on the card at 5:00 PM PDT. This race is part of the loaded Super Saturday at Hollywood park which also includes the A Gleam Handicap (GII) for mares.

This field is chock-full of super fillies with five of them coming from the (GII) Honeymoon Handicap on June 8, 2013, which was 1 1/8 mile on Turf. Headlining the field for Juddmonte Farm is the Empire Maker filly Emollient, who is trained by Bill Mott and has earned $446,900 while winning three of seven races this year. Last out, Emoillent finished sixth in the GII Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico in May after stumbling at the break and just didn’t seem comfortable the rest of the race. Her last win was on April 6, 2013 in the (GI) Ashland at Keenland. This will be her first start on turf with Mike Smith on board again.

Jerry Hollendorfer, another Hall of Fame Trainer, will run both Scarlet Strike daughter of Smart Strike and Macha from sire Majestic Warrior here. Both fillies competed in the Honeymoon Handicap and finished second and third respectively. Scarlet Strike will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano and Macha will get Gary Stevens.

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella will send in Sarach, daughter of Arch, who won the 2013 (GII) Honeymoon Handicap here wire-to-wire for her first stakes victory and gets Martin Garcia up to ride.

A few others contenders in the 2013 American Oaks are Doug O’Neill’s Wittgenstein from sire Shamardal, who was seventh in the Hollywood this year and gets Mario Guiterezz for the ride. Becky Lou out of Holy Bull, one of my favorite sires, with trainer Matt Chew and was fourth in the Hollywood last out. Neil Drysdale sends in his filly Topic, daughter of Discreet Cat who broke her maiden in outstanding fashion on June 13th.

My top two in here are Emollient coming in from the East coast and Scarlet Strike. Both fillies were the beaten favorites last time out at the same odds 4/5 and I’m looking for redemtion here. Emollient has Bill Mott, one of favorite trainers and gets Mike Smith up again who won this race last year with Lady of Shamrock. I’m looking for her to recover well after a month off in June and to score big here. Scarlet Strike came from last, after a so-so break and trailed through the opening furlongs. She rallied late to finish second that day and I hope she brings her game here Saturday. My long-shot favorite is Becky Lou, with added distance she may hit the board. Plus, I always bet on the Holy Bull babies.

Good luck girls and safe run home. Remember, always check your tickets at the betting window and don’t second guess yourself or change your mind at the last minute. One small mistake can cost you a fortune.
