Hit the Jackpot in a Maxi Dress at Delta Downs

Give your look a little Bohemian flare and hit the jackpot at this year’s Delta Downs Jackpot at the Delta Downs Race Track in Vinton, LA. Try something unconventional and traditionally bohemian and go with a maxi dress. Maxi dresses are often associated with summer time and a laid back feel. Louisiana definitely has a laid back down-home feel, but that doesn’t mean that your maxi dress look will be too casual or informal for race day. Maxis have taken on a whole new dimension and while unconventional they can be totally glamorous and race day appropriate, and even more importantly, in a sea of cocktail sheath dresses, you will stand out.

The stitch work on the top portion of the dress give it an ethnic bohemian feel, but the pleated skirt gives it some fancy flare and elevates the dress to a more dressy level for the 2013 Delta Downs Jackpot on Saturday in Louisiana.

The key to the maxi dress look is to make sure that the hem is just right. You want the bottom of the dress to just barely graze the floor, you want to channel a bohemian vibe, you don’t want to go over board and look unkempt. You also want to make sure that your maxi doesn’t just look like a swimsuit cover up and is appropriate for fall by making sure there is an actual waistline, whether empire or at your natural waist, and that the fabric is heavier. You also want to make sure there is some sort of intricate detail or special print order to ensure that the dress looks more polished and structured.

Pair your dress with heels for extra glamour and stay away from sandals so the look isn’t too summery. Just make sure your dress still grazes the ground and isn’t too short because of the heels.

My dress pick for Delta Downs Jackpot race day is a red maxi (shown right) from Anthropologie. The stitch work on the top portion of the dress give it an ethnic bohemian feel, but the pleated skirt gives it some fancy flare and elevates the dress to a more dressy level. Another choice would be the A Study in Starlet Dress or the Flutter Petals Dress, both dresses from Modcloth are pictured below.

I like nude heels (shown below) paired with the dress maxi dress for the 2013 Delta Downs Jackpot. They are chic enough to stand up to the dress but the nude color ensures that the shoes won’t take away from the dress.

Add some long statement dangly earrings and you are ready to go and make sure your hat doesn’t have a wide brim so it doesn’t look like a sun hat, like a chic fascinator (pictured below), and you are ready to go!

While it’s totally appropriate to wear hair soft and loose, as overly stiff or sever hair contrasts the look too much, make sure your hair and makeup still look polished in order to ensure that the outfit doesn’t read to relaxed. Check out Ashley Green’s polished waves. They look soft and flowy, but they are still sleek and put together. Check out Taylor Swift’s and Olivia Munn’s maxi dress looks for inspiration.
