Pennsylvania Derby 2014; California Chrome Excites Chromies

Pennsylvania Derby 2014; California Chrome Excites Chromies: As Saturday’s G2 Pennsylvania Derby approaches and California Chrome prepares for his return to the track, horse racing fans across the nation schedule viewing parties, arrange trips to Pennsylvania, and create eye-catching purple and green ensembles to support their beloved three-year-old colt. The 2014 Pennsylvania Derby is exciting all on it’s own but “Chromies” will flock to Parx Racing just to catch a glimpse of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and 2014 Preakness Stakes winner.

A young fan from Voorhees, New Jersey explained to Lady and The Track that the only reason she is heading out to Parx Racing in Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 20, 2014 is to cheer for her favorite horse. Erica Lee (20) stated, “We made hats with purple and green flowers to wear to the Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday. We’re all very excited to have the chance to see California Chrome in person! Going to the Kentucky Derby is on my bucket list and this may be the closest I get.”

A “mommy group” in Boston, Ma is busy planning a viewing party for the 2014 Pennsylvania Derby. Christina Hurst (39) said, “I hosted a party for all three Triple Crown races. We had a great time but were understandably heartbroken when California Chrome lost the Belmont Stakes. Maybe it was the new-mommy hormones but a few of us even cried!” Christina Hurst added that California Chrome’s participation in the Pennsylvania Derby gave her an excuse to host another party saying, “This race is kind of like a redo party for us since his last run was a bust. The girls are making all kinds of great food and of course we have some sort of green martini with purple jolly ranchers (see recipe below) to keep with the California Chrome theme!” Christina added reluctantly, “I am a little worried about the competition this time around though. I wasn’t before.”

Matthew Smith (28) from New York told Lady and The Track that he designed a specialty bow tie with the official DAP Racing (Dumb Ass Partners, owners of California Chrome) colors of purple and green. Matthew Smith said, “I went to Belmont Park to see California Chrome in the Belmont Stakes and I’m looking forward to making the trip over to Parx Racing. California Chrome is an excellent reason to get all dolled up with the girls and make a weekend out of it!”

The $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby for three-year-olds is run at 1 1/8 miles on a dirt track. Post time for the 2014 Pennsylvania Derby (Race #12) is set for 5:40 PM ET. The Cotillion Stakes for three-year-old fillies is set for 4:45 PM ET immediately before the Pennsylvania Derby.
