Eleven Two-Year-Olds Take On Del Mar Debutante

Eleven Two-Year-Olds Take On Del Mar Debutante: We have one weekend left until sunny Del Mar “Where the Turf meets the Surf” closes their annual summer meet. They will be hosting two premier stakes races this weekend for the juveniles the Del Mar Debutante and the Del Mar Futurity.

Kicking it off we have the 63rd running of the Del Mar Debutante set for this Saturday, September 5, 2015 for 2 year-old fillies. This is a Grade I race on the dirt going 7 furlongs for a purse of $300,000. Labor Day, Monday, September 7th, will be the Grade I Del Mar Futurity for all juveniles. Last year’s Debutante winner was Ten Broeck Farm’s Sunset Glow for Wesley Ward, while the Futurity winner was none other than our Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah for Zayat Stables and Bob Baffert.

After the last race on Monday, Del Mar will feature the “Party In The Paddock”with the live band “Wayward Sons” a fun 80’s nostalgic band. Get on down there and take in this beautiful track at the end of their summer meet.

The 2015 Del Mar Debutante is the ninth race of the day on a card of eleven with a start time of 6:10 p.m. PST. What a loaded card we have for Saturday. There is a ton of talent entered with eleven two-year-olds in the Debutante.

Bob Baffert will be looking to seal the deal for his 8th consecutive victory in the Debutante. He is sending out one of my favs Pretty N Cool who is looking for her third straight victory. This daughter of Scat Daddy won the Grade II Sorrento Stakes quite impressively stalking the pace on August 12 by 2 ¾ lengths over One True Kiss, Gomo and Right There whom return to challenge. She will have it tough Saturday. She won her maiden at Del Mar on July 19 in the slop by 4 ½ lengths after dueling for the lead, took over and won gate-to-wire. She sits outside of Come to Mischief who won her maiden gate-to-wire in a very fast fashion and she can stalk if she wants. Garcia retains the mount.

Let the showdown begin for Pretty N Cool with the other impressive debut winner the Jerry Hollendorfer trained Songbird. She broke her maiden in stellar fashion on July 26 on this track by 6 ½ lengths after clearing the field early and won gate-to-wire. She drew the outside #11 hole so it will be interesting to see if they send her from there as she’ll have to make up ground or bide her time and sit off the early pace that Come To Mischief should bring. She’s had two recent 6f works and will be uber tough in this spot. Mike Smith keeps the mount.

I will also be using another entrant for the Hollendorfer barn, the other Scat Daddy baby Surfside Tiara. She exits a 6 ½ furlong maiden win where she stalked Dream Art and drew away in fine fashion earning a 94 speed figure. Prior she was second at Los Alamitas on the 4th of July to Undisputed where she made a rail-bid, split foes and fought hard for that place. She is the one that could pick up the pieces of the speed gets too hot. It doesn’t hurt that she gets the meets leading rider Rafael Bajarano in the irons again either.

I’m also a little stuck on the daughter of Bellamy Road for Doug O’Neill here, Land Over Sea. She is exiting her maiden win going a mile on the sod July 29 at Del Mar. She ran second in her dirt debut at Los Alamitos July 12 losing to One True Kiss, who is running here, and switched to the turf. That turf race she won by 3 ¾ lengths and I like the cutback for her. If it’s super speedy up front she could steal the show possibly. Doubtful but she’ll have the best odds of these 3 and I can’t leave her out with Gutierrez up. He’s been riding mighty fine this meet and hops off Gomo. Land Over Sea recently burned a .59.2 5F work. She’s primed.

This is going to be a great race and they all have a shot to win. I’ll be playing a pick 3 starting with race #8 on the grass, to be posted on Saturday afternoon. I am not sure I will use all four fillies in race #9 depends on odds and scratches. I am sticking with #3 Pretty N Cool for the win but she won’t have playable win odds for me. So I may also put some money on either #5 Surfside Tiara or #4 Land Over Sea as they should both have playable odds for a win/place bet. Best of luck to all the girls and safe run Saturday.
